Meropenem Vial 1g is a powerful antibiotic used to treat a variety of serious bacterial infections. It belongs to a class of drugs called carbapenems, which work by killing bacteria that cause infections. Indications:
Meropenem is indicated for the treatment of various infections in adults and children, including:
- Complicated Skin and Skin Structure Infections (CSSSI): This includes infections that are deep in the skin or involve the underlying tissues, such as cellulitis, abscesses, and wound infections.
- Complicated Intra-abdominal Infections (CIAI): This includes infections of the abdomen, such as peritonitis (infection of the lining of the abdomen), and infections of the intestines, such as diverticulitis.
- Bacterial Meningitis: This is an infection of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord.
Dosage Recommendation:

- Adults: The usual dose is 500mg every 8 hours for CSSSI and 1 gram every 8 hours for CIAI. When treating infections caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a dose of 1 gram every 8 hours is recommended.
- Children: The dose is based on weight and the type of infection. For example, for complicated skin and skin structure infections, the dose is 10mg/kg every 8 hours, up to a maximum dose of 500mg.
Administration:
Meropenem is typically administered by intravenous infusion over 15 to 30 minutes. Doses of 1 gram can also be administered as an intravenous bolus injection over 3 to 5 minutes.
Precautions:
Meropenem should be used with caution in patients with:
- Hypersensitivity to β-lactams: This includes penicillin and cephalosporin antibiotics.
- Seizure disorders: Meropenem can increase the risk of seizures.
- Renal impairment: The dose may need to be adjusted in patients with kidney problems.
- Clostridium difficile infection: Meropenem can cause or worsen Clostridium difficile infection, a serious intestinal condition.
