Amoxicillin Drops is a liquid antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. It is a penicillin-type antibiotic, meaning it works by stopping the growth of bacteria.
Uses
Amoxicillin is effective against a wide range of bacterial infections, including upper respiratory tract infections, genitourinary tract infections, skin and skin structure infections, lower respiratory tract infections, and Helicobacter pylori infection.
How to Use Amoxicillin Suspension
- Shake the bottle well before each dose.
- Use a special measuring device/spoon/dropper to carefully measure the dose. Do not use a household spoon.
- Take the medication by mouth with or without food as directed by your doctor. The usual dosage is every 8 or 12 hours.
- You can add the measured dose to formula, milk, juice, water, or ginger ale just before use. Drink the entire mixture to ensure you receive the full dose. Do not mix ahead of time for future use.
- Drink plenty of fluids while taking this medication unless your doctor advises otherwise.
- Take the medication at evenly spaced times for the best effect. To help you remember, take it at the same time(s) every day.
- Continue taking the medication until the full prescribed amount is finished, even if symptoms disappear after a few days. Stopping the medication too early can lead to a return of the infection.
Side Effects
Common side effects of amoxicillin suspension include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
Serious side effects are rare but can include allergic reactions, liver problems, and severe intestinal conditions.
Precautions
- Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to amoxicillin, penicillin, cephalosporin antibiotics, or any other allergies.
- Inform your doctor or pharmacist about your medical history, especially if you have kidney disease or a certain type of viral infection (infectious mononucleosis).
- Amoxicillin suspension may contain sugar. Caution is advised if you have diabetes or any other condition that requires you to limit/avoid sugar in your diet.
- Amoxicillin may cause live bacterial vaccines (such as typhoid vaccine) to not work well. Tell your healthcare professional that you are using amoxicillin before having any immunizations/vaccinations.
- During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when clearly needed. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.
- Amoxicillin passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
Storage
- Refrigeration may improve the taste of this medicine. Certain brands may expire earlier when stored at room temperature than when refrigerated.
- Do not store in the bathroom. Keep all medications away from children and pets.
- Discard any unused portion after 14 days. The drug loses potency after that time.
