Dextromethorphan syrup 10mg/5ml is a common over-the-counter medication used to suppress coughs.
Dextromethorphan is a non-opioid cough suppressant that works by affecting the part of the brain that triggers the cough reflex. It helps reduce the urge to cough, providing temporary relief from dry, unproductive coughs.
Dextromethorphan syrup is used for:
- Cough relief: To temporarily relieve coughs without phlegm (mucus) that are caused by the common cold, flu, or other upper respiratory infections.
The recommended dosage for adults and children 12 years and older is 10-20mg (1-2 teaspoonfuls) every 4 hours, or 30mg (3 teaspoonfuls) every 6-8 hours, not to exceed 120mg (12 teaspoonfuls) in 24 hours. For children 6 to 12 years old, the dosage is 5-10mg (1/2-1 teaspoonful) every 4 hours, or 15mg (1 1/2 teaspoonfuls) every 6-8 hours, not to exceed 60mg (6 teaspoonfuls) in 24 hours. For children 2 to 6 years old, the dosage is 2.5-5mg (1/4-1/2 teaspoonful) every 4 hours, or 7.5mg (3/4 teaspoonful) every 6-8 hours, not to exceed 30mg (3 teaspoonfuls) in 24 hours. For children under 2 years old, consult a doctor.
Dextromethorphan should be used with caution in patients with:
- Breathing problems: A history of asthma, emphysema, or chronic bronchitis.
- Liver problems: A history of liver disease or liver failure.
- High blood pressure: Dextromethorphan can increase blood pressure.
- Other medical conditions: Talk to your doctor before using dextromethorphan if you have any other medical conditions.
Common side effects of dextromethorphan include:
- Drowsiness: This is the most common side effect.
- Dizziness: You may feel dizzy or lightheaded.
- Nausea: You may feel nauseous.
