Product Description
Isosorbide mononitrate 60mg tablets are a medication used to prevent chest pain (angina) in patients with coronary artery disease. It belongs to a class of drugs known as nitrates, which work by relaxing and widening blood vessels, allowing blood to flow more easily to the heart.
How It Works:
Isosorbide mononitrate is a vasodilator, meaning it relaxes the muscles in the walls of blood vessels, causing them to widen. This widening of blood vessels, particularly the veins, reduces the amount of blood returning to the heart, which decreases the workload on the heart. This also reduces the pressure within the heart, making it easier for the heart to pump blood.
Uses:
Isosorbide mononitrate is primarily used to prevent angina attacks, which are episodes of chest pain caused by reduced blood flow to the heart. It is not intended to relieve chest pain once it occurs.
Dosage and Administration:
Isosorbide mononitrate 60mg tablets are typically taken once daily, usually in the morning upon waking. The dose may be increased to 120mg (two tablets) daily, both to be taken once daily in the morning. The dose can be titrated to minimize the possibility of headache, by initiating treatment with 30mg (half a tablet) for the first 2-4 days.
Side Effects:
Common side effects of isosorbide mononitrate include headache, dizziness, lightheadedness, nausea, and flushing. Headache is often a sign that the medication is working and may gradually subside as your body adjusts to the medication. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help manage headaches. Dizziness and lightheadedness can occur, especially when you first start taking the medication. Get up slowly from a sitting or lying position to minimize dizziness.
More serious side effects are rare but can include fainting, fast/irregular/pounding heartbeat, and allergic reaction. If you experience fainting, seek medical attention immediately. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience a rapid or irregular heartbeat. A very serious allergic reaction is rare but can occur. Symptoms include rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face, tongue, or throat), severe dizziness, and trouble breathing. Seek immediate medical help if you notice any of these symptoms.
Precautions:
Tell your doctor if you are allergic to isosorbide mononitrate or any other ingredients in the medication. Inform your doctor about any pre-existing medical conditions, especially low blood pressure, congestive heart failure, or kidney disease. Discuss the risks and benefits of isosorbide mononitrate with your doctor before taking it during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Avoid alcohol and marijuana, as they can increase dizziness. Avoid driving, operating machinery, or engaging in activities requiring alertness until you know how the medication affects you.
Drug Interactions:
Isoxsuprine can interact with other medications, including those used to treat high blood pressure and other heart conditions. Tell your doctor about all medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, and herbal supplements.
Important Notes:
Do not share this medication with others. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the regular time. Do not double the dose to catch up. Store isosorbide mononitrate tablets at room temperature away from light and moisture. Keep all medications away from children and pets.
