Product Description
Ofloxacin 200mg tablets are a type of antibiotic medication used to treat various bacterial infections. It belongs to a class of drugs called fluoroquinolone antibiotics. Ofloxacin works by stopping the growth of bacteria, effectively fighting off infections.
Uses:
Ofloxacin 200mg tablets are prescribed for a variety of bacterial infections, including:
- Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): This includes both uncomplicated cystitis (bladder infection) and more serious infections like acute pyelonephritis (kidney infection).
- Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): Ofloxacin is effective against susceptible strains of Neisseria gonorrhoeae, the bacteria responsible for gonorrhea.
- Respiratory Infections: It can be used for conditions like acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), including chronic bronchitis, and community-acquired pneumonia.
- Other Infections: Ofloxacin may be used for other infections, but it is not the first-line choice for all bacterial infections.
Dosage and Administration:
The recommended dosage of ofloxacin varies depending on the type and severity of the infection being treated. Typically, adults take 200mg to 800mg daily, divided into equal doses.
- Single Dose: For some infections, like uncomplicated cystitis or gonorrhea, a single 400mg dose may be sufficient.
- Multiple Doses: For more severe or complicated infections, a higher dose of 400mg twice daily may be necessary.
- Frequency: Doses are typically given at equal intervals, usually every 12 hours.
- Administration: Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Do not crush, chew, or break the tablet.
- Food: Ofloxacin can be taken with or without food.
Important Precautions:
- Renal Impairment: Dosage adjustments are necessary for patients with kidney problems, as ofloxacin is primarily excreted by the kidneys.
- Hepatic Impairment: Patients with severe liver dysfunction may need reduced doses.
- Children and Adolescents: Ofloxacin is contraindicated for use in children and growing adolescents.
- Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Ofloxacin is not recommended for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
- Tendon Problems: Fluoroquinolones, including ofloxacin, can cause serious and potentially permanent tendon damage, particularly in older adults, those taking corticosteroids, or those with kidney, heart, or lung transplants.
- Nervous System: Ofloxacin can cause nerve problems (peripheral neuropathy), central nervous system effects, and may worsen myasthenia gravis.
- Drug Interactions: Inform your doctor about all medications you are taking, including over-the-counter medications, herbal supplements, and vitamins. Ofloxacin can interact with certain medications.
- Medical Conditions: Inform your doctor about any pre-existing medical conditions, especially seizure disorders, kidney or liver problems, or heart conditions.
