Indications:
Piperacillin + Tazobactam is indicated for the treatment of various serious bacterial infections, including:
- Severe pneumonia: This includes hospital-acquired and ventilator-associated pneumonia.
- Complicated urinary tract infections: This includes pyelonephritis (infection of the kidneys).
- Complicated intra-abdominal infections: Infections within the abdomen, such as peritonitis (inflammation of the lining of the abdomen).
- Complicated skin and soft tissue infections: This includes diabetic foot infections.
- Bacteremia: A bloodstream infection, often associated with other infections.
- Neutropenic fever: Fever in patients with a low white blood cell count, often due to a bacterial infection.
Dosage Recommendation:
The recommended dose and frequency of administration depend on the severity and location of the infection, the expected pathogens, and the patient's age, weight, and kidney function.
- Adults and adolescents: The usual dose is 4g piperacillin/0.5g tazobactam every 8 hours. For more severe infections, such as nosocomial pneumonia or infections in neutropenic patients, the dose may be increased to 4g piperacillin/0.5g tazobactam every 6 hours.
- Children aged 2-12 years: The dose is calculated based on body weight, ranging from 80mg piperacillin/10mg tazobactam per kg every 6 hours to 100mg piperacillin/12.5mg tazobactam per kg every 8 hours.
Precautions:
Piperacillin + Tazobactam should be used with caution in patients with:
- Hypersensitivity to penicillin or other beta-lactam antibiotics: This combination can cause severe allergic reactions.
